Atlanta likes to call itself the capital of the South, and it offers visitors and residents a wealth of things to do, indoors and out. It’s also only a few hours’ drive from the North Georgia mountains and the Georgia coast, so locals can plan a quick weekend in the hills or by the water just about any time they like!
If you do want to stay in the city, however, there is plenty to see and do, with attractions for everyone in the family. Atlanta also hosts concerts, festivals and Braves, Hawks, Falcons and Atlanta United games throughout the year, so you’ll never be short of something to see and do! Here is a short list of a few fun things you might do in Atlanta, Georgia, as early as this weekend.
The World of Coca-Cola
You don’t need to be a Coke fan to enjoy the World of Coca-Cola, the museum of the soft drink that was invented in Atlanta. It sits on Pemberton Place downtown, next to the Georgia Aquarium, and showcases far more than the drink itself: vintage advertising, the history of the brand, a look at how bottling works and a tasting room where you can try Coca-Cola drinks from around the world. Be sure to visit the gift shop as well, where you can stock up on souvenirs that carry the Coca-Cola name!
Georgia Aquarium
With thousands of animals spanning hundreds of species, the Georgia Aquarium is an excellent choice for anyone who loves nature, and especially marine life! Its galleries hold more than 11 million gallons of water. Enjoy whale sharks, beluga whales, manta rays, sea lions, penguins and so much more, and be sure to set aside most of a day, as there’s always lots to see.
The High Museum of Art
The High Museum of Art in Midtown calls itself the leading art museum in the Southeast. It offers permanent galleries and special exhibitions, in a white building by Richard Meier with later additions by Renzo Piano that is a landmark in its own right. Set aside plenty of time to see it all and come back often, as its rotating exhibitions always give you something new to enjoy.
Piedmont Park and the BeltLine
On a nice day, head outside. Piedmont Park, a few blocks from the High, has wide lawns with skyline views, trails and Lake Clara Meer, and a Saturday green market for much of the year. From the park you can pick up the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail and walk or bike past murals, restaurants and Ponce City Market, toward Inman Park and the Old Fourth Ward.
